Defy Extreme Wood Stain has been formulated using state of the art Nano-Technology to create a level of durability that has not been available in a clear wood stain in the past.
The Nano Particles are similar to Sunscreen. When the Particles are distributed at a rate of over 30 trillion per square inch, they will reflect the sun and provide UV protection that has never been seen in a “Crystal” Clear Wood Finish. A clear finish that protects wood from graying.
This is a First in the Industry!
Defy Extreme ClearStain:
- Crystal Clear finish without any tint
- Water-Based with easy soap and water cleanup
- VOC Compliant
- Leading protection that will outperform all clear wood stains

Wood Decks 100-150 sq. feet per gallon for 2 coats.

When reapplying after a year or so, do I need to strip the first coat off or can I coat over top of the second?
Clean and then recoat.
Hey, I’m having the cedar siding stained on my house and on some sides after one coat it seems the stain doesn’t soak into the wood and stays on top a bit. Are there some cases like this where one coat is enough or should I always do two?
Only do one if the first coat cannot penetrate in. Hopefully, you removed any previous stains prior to applying the Defy.
To keep the color – light walnut – really light can I apply one coat of the walnut followed by one coat of clear? I’m stripping the current stain, brighten and reapply stain. Wood is a couple of years old. Or, does two coats of walnut protect the wood better? Thanks Another question – I’ve asked this before but not sure I did this question thing right LOL. Can a paint thinner be added to keep the color lighter and then apply two coats? ( I agree – what a stupid question 🙂
No, you cannot apply the Clear over the Light Walnut stain and no, you cannot thin it. We have answered both of these questions prior for you a few times. LOL.
I think you have. Sorry. Told you I’m mixed up on the questions I’ve asked. Must be having senior moments. 🙂
I have an older fence (10 years old). Pressure Treated. I have removed most of the “gray” with a pressure washer (1800 psi). I want to prevent further graying, but don’t want ANY colour. Is Defy Extreme Clear the BEST product out there for me? Also, do I need to “brighten it first”? Thanks!!
Clean and brighten for prep and then apply the Defy Extreme Clear.
I applied the brightener.
Then I applied the Defy Extreme Clear. Application was on a day where the ambient temp was 68F.
Applied first coat and wood was “sucked up” immediately. Used a brush to push off any excess sealer.
Applied second coat after 10 minutes.
Is the final product supposed to be a “matte” finish?
Is water supposed to “bead” off the wood?
Should I be doing a third coat?
When do I need to reapply a maintenance coat?
No shine or beading with the Defy Extreme. Do not add a third coat. Redo every 12-24 months or as needed.
Hello,
We are wrapping up construction on a redwood deck in our yard. Our desire is to keep the natural color of the redwood so we are looking at using the DEFY Extreme Clear. The last few months it has been raining fairly regularly so I am wondering how long we should wait to seal it. I was thinking we should wait until June (Northern California) when the weather is more consistently dry and warm. Do you have a recommendation for how long to wait?
Also, we have used 1×4 attached to posts for guardrails. Should we apply the DEFY Extreme Clear to these boards as well? Both sides & end cuts?
I imagine the deck will need cleaning before applying the sealer. I was planning to use the DEFY Wood Cleaner. Do we need to do any sort of sanding of the deck surface before using the cleaner or the sealer?
Lastly, if we decided we wanted the redwood to gray over time is there an alternate product you would recommend?
Thanks!
Wating about 3-4 months after install is normal. Prep with both the Cleaner and the wood brightener. The clear will start to gray around 9-12 months so it is normal to prep and reapply annually or if you prefer the gray, just leave as is. Yes, you should apply to the posts.
What product would you recommend to use on a my rough cut white pine board and batton barn? I do not want to radically change the color and was hoping that a clear wood preservative would be the correct way to go.
Clear will give you some UV protection but the Defy Extreme in a stain color will give 3 times the UV protection on the barn. Couple of years with the clear on vertical wood. 6 years or so if you choose a color like the Natural Pine.

You cannot add a tinted color over the clear without removing the clear first. The tinted colors will last 2-3 times longer the the clear when it comes to UV protection from graying.
Follow up- If I used the cedar tone on the redwood siding, would it last significantly longer? The house is in a wooded area and does not get full sun.
I have a house in Atlanta, GA with redwood siding. 1/2 built in the 60s and an addition in the 80’s. I have cleaned and brightened one wall and want to finish this one before moving around one section at a time in the spring. I’m going to order the Defy extreme clear to start. I want the natural redwood look but the tint looks odd on my sample boards. If we opted for a tint in the spring would I need to strip the clear before prior to coming back to this wall?
It will most likely go bad within a year or so but if the lid is closed well it might last longer.
How long can an opened pail of Defy Extreme Clear be kept? Would I be able to use it the following year as I have a cedar deck with a southern exposure that would likely require reapplication every year.
Clear will not last nearly as long as a tinted stain. this goes for all brands of stains or sealers. For example the Defy Extreme Stain in one of the tints will last 2-3 times longer then the Defy Extreme Clear.
Hello,
Please advise as to how you product compares? Also, can it be used on western red cedar siding?
Thanks!
You can clean and re coat when needed.
This is not a hardwood finish though. You would want the Defy Stain for Hardwoods.
What about touch ups? Do you have to sand and refinish? Or is there an easier method for quick re-touches? please email response, I am looking to convince a client of the need to use a hardwood finish, but I need to know this key info, before I present this to him. Thanks…
Leaves you deck looking natural with no color added.
