Nano-Technology Improves Stain Performance 200-600%
SaverSystems has joint ventured with several companies to develop a new long-lasting stain technology. Our research efforts over the last year and a half have lead to a new development in the performance of exterior, semi-transparent wood finishes to protect your deck.
A newly developed nano-technology used in combination with our existing technology has been found to significantly increase the durability and weather resistance of our synthetic resin based deck stains. This new light stabilizing nano-technology actually works by blocking and absorbing the harmful UV rays from the sun that damage your wood.
Not only does this new technology help prevent wood from graying it also helps prevent water intrusion while resisting fungal growth. The independent test results are in, and below are photo’s of the actual test boards which show how the new DEFY Extreme new technology stacks up against the best selling national brands.

How many square feet will one gallon cover
About 150-250 sq feet per gallon per coat.
I sanded my deck and cleaned & brightened it. I applied two wet coats but it appears the water beads up in some areas and not so much in others. Are these areas still protected or does it need another coat of stain?
This is normal. Do not apply more stain.
My deck is several years old and I just cleaned and sanded. It was very dirty, but looks good now. I have two questions:
1. Is a “wet on wet” application necessary. This practice seems counter-intuitive to me, but I am willing to try it. Just afraid of over applying, I guess.
2. Is a “wet on wet” application only done on horizontal surfaces, as opposed to vertical posts and balusters, etc.
1. Yes if doing the two coats which is normal. If you want to apply just one coat, that should work as well. You could always apply another coat in 12-24 months.
2. Correct.
I have a NEW pressure-treated pine fence, only 3 months old. Do I need to clean it first, or can I just power-wash it on a low setting?
Clean and then brighten for prep.
I sanded down my 18 year old cedar deck and applied 1 coat of Defy semi-transparent light walnut wood stain. I could not get back to it and now it’s been a few days. Can I still apply another coat or will it not penetrate the wood? I do not want to darken the deck color any more.
No, it will not take right now. You can lightly clean and recoat next year.
I have two questions. I used the extreme semitransparent in light walnut in my deck and now putting on my porch. What is the lowest temperature I can apply in since I’m half finished with the porch and the weather is now changing. Also 12-24 hours before expected rain? And last question, next summer I know it will need a washing after winter. What do I wash it with and what if it needs any touch ups?
Not lower than 55. No rain doe 12 hours. Clean with water to remove dirt.
I have a brand new deck,(aug. 2022 installed) pressure treated wood. I like the semi transparent stains from previous decks. do i need to wait ??6-12 months? before sealing. and do you recommend two coats initially. in midwest so fluctuation of temperatures. Assuming Defy Extreme semi transparent stain is recommended. Any thoughts on “permanent ” sealers that give a 25 year warranty?? Thanks
No sealer will last 25 years. Those are gimmicks. See here for new wood: https://www.defystainhelp.com/prep-new-wood-for-defy-stains/
My pressure-treated pine deck is ~18 months old, completely pressure washed and looks great (no gray or cracks). I want to get it stained ASAP. Is it mandatory to use cleaner and brightener if the deck has no other finish on it?
Yes.
Does it have to be fully cured before temperatures dip to 45 degrees or lower?
Full dry, yes.
Is the DEFY EXTREME safe to use on a boat dock? As I don’t see gray stain in the Defy marine stain.
Yes, it is.
Once stain is applied ;
how long before you can walk on it??
6-24 hours. Make sure it is dried and cured.
I have a client with a 10-15 year old pressure treated deck around a pool in southwest Florida. She has and wants to keep a natural appearance. What do you recommend?
Try the Defy Extreme in Natural Tone.
I’ve been using your product in my deck for a long time now. As I expected, after sanding my older deck floor boards smooth (well after 80Grit) and applying your product, it raised the grain on the wood…at least that what it feels like. Can I use a 4000-5000 grit steel wool to make it less grainy feeling or will that compromise the resin sealant? Thanks
No, and never use steel wool on a deck. It will leave metal in the wood and that will lead to black rust spots.
We do not offer it. Amazon sells it.
Will the cleaner, brightener or stain harm Trex decking?
Do not get the stain on the Trex as it will stain it. The cleaner and brightener are fine.
Thank you
if I need to modify a color, what kind of stain should I use?
The only way to modify a color is to mix multiple colors of the Defy Extreme together.
I have part of a 5 gal of extreme 3yrs old can I still use it
Probably not good. Shelf life is 12 months after being opened
I thoroughly power washed my new deck to prep for stain. Do I still need to prep with your products first? I paint for a living and we always just stain the day after washing. I don’t want this product to fail.
Post pictures.
Can this be used on weathered concrete for the color component? I treated a fence and loved the color selection. Im thinking driftwood gray on a backyard concrete pad? If not what are other defy products for concrete could be used to get protection and color?
No, it cannot be used for concrete.
Do I need to mask off black aluminum balusters on the railing?
You should not get the stain on the spindles so mask or stain around them.
Pressure wash and reapply every 3-4 years for fences.
Does Clear Extreme Wood Stain prevent the graying of pressure treated wood?
Yes, a little for about a year. If you want longer UV protection, then use Defy Extreme in a tinted color.
If the gallon is unopened, can it be returned?
See policy here: https://www.deckstain.com/refund.html
what is the proper prep treatment for this product? We just had a new pergola built with pressure treated wood. Do I need to sand? or just use the wood cleaner and then go to staining?
See here about new wood: https://www.defystainhelp.com/prep-new-wood-for-defy-stains/
is it possible to add a little color to the grey stain? We want a blue tint to co-ordinate with our shutters and door.
No, that is not possible.
The DEFY Extreme semi-transparent wood stain we used on our deck had the words “ultra low VOC formula” and this one says “Premium Finish.” Does that make a difference? Is the Ultra Low VOC important?
No difference.
I’m going to put Defy wood stain down I have a moisture meter my meter goes from 0 to 60% what percent is acceptable to apply the stain.
15% or less.
How do you apply this product? Do you have to wipe it off after a certain amount of time? I know some products you do just wondering.
Apply with a stain pad or brush. Do not back wipe. See here for some tips: https://www.defystainhelp.com/tips/defy-application-instructions/how-to-apply-defy-extreme/
The tips say not to apply two coats to brand new wood. Is this correct? I will be applying to a new deck I put in a year ago, will one coat be ok or do two because it weathered for a year?
You are borderline with this but to be safe, do one coat this year and another coat as needed in 12-24 months to the floors.
Can this product be used for cedar siding?
Yes, works great!
1 coat or two of Defy Extreme for new, unfinished interior wood surfaces in outdoor gazebo structure?
See here about new wood tips: https://www.defystainhelp.com/prep-new-wood-for-defy-stains/
I have a redwood deck coated with Penofin (sierra). Can Defy extreme be applied on it after cleaning with deck cleaner? If not, what is the right set of steps to apply Defy product? Also, I like the reddish brown color of Penofin Sierra. What would be the best color get a similar color, Butternut?
You need to strip with Defy Stain Stripper and then use the Defy Brightener as the Penofin has to fully come off. Use Light Walnut color.
So, Stain Stripper is the first step? Or do I need to use cleaner?
Stripper then brigtener. No need for cleaner.
Thank you!
I have around 600sqft of deck. I tried using your calculator and saw the recommendations. Can you confirm how many gallons of products do I need?
1) Stripper
2) Brightner
3) Defy Extreme Wood Stain
Should I use extreme or Hardwood stain?
1. About 4 gallons.2. One gallon.3. 5-6 gallons
I applied 2 coats to my decks in 2019. They need a refresher. I power washed them. What is the best protocol to apply stain? thanks
https://www.deckstain.com/deck-floor-staining-push-brush-detail.html
Is this product (Defy Extreme Wood Stain) correct for a 12 month old cedar fence (no previous stain)? Can the fence (in great shape) just be rinsed with water and then stained? We need to avoid a three step process as the fence is very long.
For pre, you would need to use the Defy Wood Cleaner and then the Defy Brightener. Rinsing with water is not adequate for prepping to stain.
Do you have a solid color stain?
We do not sell the Defy Solid Stain on this site as it has to be custom mixed.
Can this product be used for pine deck/steps? How long is the drying time fir this stain?
Yes. Dries in 2-4 hours.
Does this have a matte finish?
All Defy Stains have no shine.
I know you all say to apply one coat to new wood, which I have done. Should I apply a second coat after some period of time, one year, etc.?
https://www.defystainhelp.com/prep-new-wood-for-defy-stains/
I have an 18-year old deck, pressure treated pine, that I’ve just finished power washing. The decking is kind of rough, some splinters, and I wasn’t able to remove all of the previous stain from the balusters. Is your stain recommended for older, rough decks? One coat or two? How many gallons for an older deck and railings that total about 1,000 square feet?
Yes, the Defy works well for older wood. About 10 gallons for this.
I just ordered the stain (already had your brightener) and stripper. I’m sanding the cedar deck to bare wood and was going to just use brightener before the stain. But I saw this comment below: 06/09/2020
Defy Extreme in the semi-transparent can be cleaned and reapplied as needed. It does not have to be stripped or sanded. After sanding a deck, use the Defy Wood Cleaner for the final prep. Just one coat of the Defy Stain.” Does this mean no brightener needed? How does this cleaner differ from the stripper?
After sanding it is best to clean and brighten for prep. The Stripper cannot be used on unstained wood.
I don’t understand then the difference between the cleaner and the brightener. Aren’t both non-chlorine bleach solutions? What do they do differently from one another?
They are completely different. You need the Brightener to neutralize after using the Cleaner or Stripper.
I just applied this product to our deck. Looks great! Should I apply a sealer as well?
No, you can never apply a sealer over the Defy stains.
I have a large deck at my cabin in the North Carolina mountains. I was recently doubled in size. The deck itself is pine. Part of the deck is 13 years old and has had 3 coats of solid stain applied over the years, some from Lowes and the latest was Arbor Coat. The newest part of the deck has 1 coat of Arbor Coat. The bottom line is that the deck looks awful and needs to be redone. I saw your product on one of the websites I looked at and would like to try it. Do I have to remove the old stains first and if so what do I use?
If you would like to use the Defy semi-transparent stains then yes, you would have to remove all the current solid stains and that would require power sanding.
Is it acceptable to mix Extreme for Hardwoods with Extreme used for pine? I have a project with just enough product to finish if I mix the two. Would this change the appearance? Does the Hardwood variant come out darker/lighter? Thanks
They should not be mixed.
I have a new green treated deck that is 4 months old and want to treat it in the spring. i like the natural look. What stain or product would you recommend I use? Thank you!
Any colors that you like in the Extreme line will work. Make sure to prep using the Defy Wood Cleaner and the Defy Brightener.
I have a cedar deck which we’re sanding down to bare wood. How much square footage does of a gallon of extreme cover ? Then because it looks like you recommend 2 coats I guess I should double that ?? Also, Iv’e been online researching and some products say stain and sealer. Would this be considered the same ?
About 100-150 Sq feet for two coats. Defy is a stain and sealer. All deck stains are sealers.
what is the maximum number of days (after cleaning or rain) for apply stain to deck?
Stain within 14 days of prep.
Recommendations say that new wood should not get wet on wet (2 coats). What qualifies as new? My pressure treated deck was installed March of this year, so it has aged 6 months.
Anything under 12 months. See here for tips: https://www.defystainhelp.com/prep-new-wood-for-defy-stains/
So that implies that my deck walking surface should only get one coat?
Correct.
I have a 3 year old deck with pressure treated wood. I don’t know remember what the builder used for stain or sealant. Most of it is gone but not all. The hand rails I had done a year ago and paint contractor used Sherwin Williams Super Deck but is now starting to peel. What do I need to do to prepare this to apply the DEFY Semi-Transparent Stain. This receives sun all day and so far neither of the two used before has held up. Please advise how to prepare and how long does this product last in all day sun as my deck wraps all the way around the house so a lot of deck. Endurance and longevity is what I am looking for. Thanks
Pictures?
How can I get a better idea of how the color would look on my deck other than these pictures from internet?
Test samples: https://www.deckstain.com/defy-stain-samples.html
How many coats of Defy Extreme would you recommend for 5 year old Poplar board and batton that has not be stained or treated yet. Also, how often do you recommend reapplying stain to wood siding?
2 coats applied wet on wet. Redo vertical siding every 3-6 years or as needed.
wet on wet meaning apply the second coat before the first is dry?
See for tips: https://www.defystainhelp.com/what-is-wet-on-wet-stain-application/
I am preparing to stain a shed that was originally treated with Sansin water repellant wood sealer (no stain). Can I start with the cleaner and then the brightener before staining or do I need to strip the sealer off?
Strip and brighten for prep is correct.
