How to Apply Defy Stains to a Wooden Fence
A wooden fence is a valuable addition to any home, enhancing curb appeal, providing privacy, and ensuring safety for kids and pets. To maintain its beauty and longevity, regular care is essential. Applying a quality stain like Defy Exterior Wood Stain protects your fence from the damaging effects of weather and keeps it looking great for years.
Step 1: Prepare the Wood
Proper preparation is critical to achieving the best results:
- Clean the Fence:
- Use Defy Wood Cleaner to remove dirt, grime, graying, fungi, and other contaminants.
- Follow with Defy Wood Brightener to restore the wood’s natural color and open its pores for better stain absorption.
- Check Weather Conditions:
- Ensure the weather is dry and rain is not expected for at least 12 hours after application.
- Avoid applying the stain in direct sunlight or when temperatures are outside the range of 45-95°F.
- While the surface can be slightly damp, it should not be wet or saturated.
- Perform a Water Drop Test:
- Sprinkle a few drops of water on the wood surface. If the water absorbs within a few seconds, the wood is ready for staining. If not, allow more time for the wood to dry.
Step 2: Staining the Fence
- Prepare the Stain:
- Stir or shake the stain well before use. If the stain has been sitting for a while, take it to a paint store to have it mechanically shaken.
- Protect Surrounding Areas:
- Use plastic drop cloths or tarps to cover landscaping, house siding, windows, concrete, and other surfaces you want to keep stain-free.
- Apply the Stain:
- Use a brush, roller, stain pad, or sprayer for application.
- Start at one end of the fence and work along the entire length of the first board before moving on to the next. This prevents lap marks and ensures a uniform appearance.
- Back Brush Excess Stain:
- After 10-15 minutes, return to the starting point and back brush or wipe away any excess stain that has not soaked into the wood. This prevents streaking and ensures an even finish.
Step 3: Recoating and Maintenance
- Recoat Every 5-7 Years:
- There’s no need to strip the old stain before recoating. Simply clean the fence and apply Defy Wood Brightener before applying a fresh coat of Defy Stain.
- Routine Maintenance:
- Regularly inspect your fence and clean it as needed to maintain its appearance and protection.
Protect Your Investment with Defy Stains

I put two coats of Defy semi transparent stain on my deck yesterday. I noticed in one 3 x 5 area I did not put the second coat and you can see the area is lighter. Can I put a second coat on now that the deck is dry?
No, it will not take once cured.
The article I just read doesn’t talk about how to apply two coats.

Should I do a wet on wet application for my fence, or a single coat? It was put up last year, has never been stained.
Wet on wet for this.
I have some questions for choosing stain. We’re trying to get some wood fencing installed soon, but we don’t know what color to stain. What factors should I use to choose a color? We were thinking about getting our fencing from someone similar to http://www.elrodfence.com/faq.nxg
There are no pictures on that link. Any color will work. Best to get some samples from our site to test.
Will mixing your stain color, Natural Pine, with your clear stain produce a lighter stain on my fence? I have cleaned and brightened my wood fence with your products, but the color looks stripped and I wanted to get that natural pine look back without going too dark. thanks!
Yes that will make a lighter color.
