How to Apply Defy Stains to a Fence
Wooden fences are a great investment to increase a home’s curb appeal. They also offer privacy for families and safety for kids and pets. Wood fences can last many years if they are well maintained. To keep a wood fence looking great and standing the test of time it is crucial to protect it from the damaging effects of the elements. Regularly applying a wood fence stain like Defy will ensure you get the most out of your investment.
Before applying Defy Exterior Wood Stain to your fence, it is crucial to prep the wood by cleaning it. Using a product like Defy Wood Cleaner and Wood Brightener will make this step easier. Clean the wood fence to remove unwanted dirt, grime, graying, fungi, and other contaminants. After the wood fence is clean it can then be protected with any of the Defy stain products.
Before applying Defy Stain to a wooden fence be sure you have an adequate weather window for doing so. Although the surface may be slightly damp, avoid applying Defy to wet or saturated surfaces or if rain is expected within 12 hours. Air temperatures should be between 45-95 degrees and avoid applying in direct sunlight.
Perform a water drop test by sprinkling a few drops of water on the wood surface. The water should absorb into the wood within a few seconds. If it does not, then do not apply Defy stain. The wood may not be dry or porous enough to accept the new stain. Allow the wood to dry until it is ready.
You can apply Defy Wood Stain using a brush, roller, stain pad, or sprayer. Be sure the product is mixed well. If the stain has been sitting around for a while, take it to your local paint shop and have them shake it up for you before opening it.
Use plastic drop cloths or tarps to shield any landscaping, house siding, concrete, windows, or anything you do not want stain on. Start on one end of the fence and coat the entire length of the first board with Defy stain before moving on to the next board. Work in this manner working your way across the entire fence. After 10-15 minutes go back to where you started and back brush or wipe away any excess stain that has not soaked into the wood.
Use Defy Stain on your wooden fence every 5-7 years or as needed. There is no need to strip the old stain off the fence every time prior to a recoat. Just clean the fence and use Defy wood brightener, then recoat with the same Defy Stain. Protect your investment and get years of protection for your wood fence with Defy Stains.

I put two coats of Defy semi transparent stain on my deck yesterday. I noticed in one 3 x 5 area I did not put the second coat and you can see the area is lighter. Can I put a second coat on now that the deck is dry?
No, it will not take once cured.
The article I just read doesn’t talk about how to apply two coats.

Should I do a wet on wet application for my fence, or a single coat? It was put up last year, has never been stained.
Wet on wet for this.
I have some questions for choosing stain. We’re trying to get some wood fencing installed soon, but we don’t know what color to stain. What factors should I use to choose a color? We were thinking about getting our fencing from someone similar to http://www.elrodfence.com/faq.nxg
There are no pictures on that link. Any color will work. Best to get some samples from our site to test.
Will mixing your stain color, Natural Pine, with your clear stain produce a lighter stain on my fence? I have cleaned and brightened my wood fence with your products, but the color looks stripped and I wanted to get that natural pine look back without going too dark. thanks!
Yes that will make a lighter color.
